On Friday, we had an excellent presentation by the Calgary Humane Society.  We learned about how we affect wildlife and how wildlife affects us.  We learned that urbanization and habituation can lead to negative outcomes for wildlife.  The presenter also taught us about the 3 R's: Rights, Respect, and Responsibility.

For Day 12 of 30x30 today, we continued focussing on measurement.  Students were very engaged in using trundle wheels to measure distances outside.

Ken Taylor Makerspace

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are in the process of creating a school Makerspace in our Learning Commons. What’s a Makerspace? It is a place where students can gather to make and create. Our Makerspace will focus on building, robotics, technology, coding, sewing, or a combination of these skills.  A Makerspace allows students to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. It promotes critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity, and design thinking.
In order to get started on this space, we would like to start to collect items that we can use in this space.  If you have any items that you would like to donate to the school, please send your child with them in a sealed Ziploc bag. We will be collecting from May 23 – June 2.   Please note that all students at Kenneth D. Taylor School will use these materials and they will not be returned.

For today's 30x30 challenge, we took our creative journals outside and did some reflection.  After a discussion around biodiversity, we used our senses to sketch and write about what we could see, hear, feel, and smell in the school yard.  Then, we imagined what the school yard may have been like in the  past, before human development.

www.30x30.davidsuzuki.org

Today, we used this time outside to explore measurement.  Using meter sticks, we began investigating and measuring a variety outdoor objects.  We look forward to continue with this in the upcoming days.

In math, students worked in groups to sort a variety of shapes based on their attributes.  Some of the attributes that we focussed on were size, color, type of shape, and number of faces, edges, and vertices.

Tomorrow, we are going on our field trip to Studio Bell and East Village.  Students will need to bring their backpacks and a bagged lunch.  It looks like we can expect some nice weather, so please remember to put on sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes.  It should be a great day!!!
