We are still working hard to complete our legends so that we can share them during conferences.  We have also been developing a class legend.  Students are working together to contribute and select a variety of story ideas.

Mindful Monday:

Today, we continued practicing our money skills.  We are working on recognizing the type of coin and value of that coin.  We also began adding and subtracting money.  Students are definitely able to share and practice this skill at home.

In math, we continued to practice our addition and subtraction skills.  Students worked to answer word problems using a variety of strategies.  We continue to work on recognizing what the word problems are asking as well as which strategy to use.

Thinking Thursday

Today, we began to create our own legends.  Using the knowledge gained from the First Nations stories, we developed a specific criteria for our legends.  After, we worked with partners to begin developing the stories and begin a story plan.

Wondering Wednesday:

This morning, we continued with our "Grand Conversations".  Students are reading chapter books at their own reading level and pace.  They are working on using the Reading Powers to guide discussions with other students reading the same book.  The focus is on comprehension skills and vocabulary development.  Students are beginning to select specific details from their book and use these details to enhance their writing.

Tuning In Tuesday:

We have been learning about the identity of Canada's first people.  Through the stories of David Bouchard, students have been reflecting on a variety values and lessons.  This afternoon, we listened to an audio of the story, The Elders are Watching.  Students were asked to reflect on the lessons learned from the story as well as how they could give back to the Earth.

Mindful Monday:

Last Friday, students brought home a journal with a letter written to parents.  This letter explained some of the learning experiences that have been taking place.  Students will share that letter. Please write a short message back or initial their work.

Thinking Thursday:

This afternoon, we began to test the bridges that were created before the break.  Students focused on building a bridge that could span a length of 30cm and support the weight of a full water bottle.  So far, all of the tests have been successful and have led to some interesting conversation about the purpose of a bridge as well as how various types of bridges work.

Happy New Year!

We are working on getting back into the regular routine.  In math, we are still practicing our addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers.  We shared an inspiring book "Hope Springs".  Students engaged in discussion and continued to reflect on the quality of life in various places around the world.
