Events of the Day...

Wondering Wednesday

Today we did some building and experiments with pillars.  Students were presented with a testable question: Which shape of pillar would support the most weight?  After some discussion about the purpose of pillars and where we might find them, students began building a cylinder-shaped, triangular-shaped, and rectangular-shaped pillar.  Students then began placing books on top of each pillar to see which held the most books.  Then, students were able to weigh those books.

Events of the Day...

Wondering Wednesday

Today, we enjoyed another amazing story telling session with Denise Miller.  Students were very engaged with the legends and songs that she shared.

Many students brought home nonfiction home reading books.  I just wanted to share some ideas for encouraging reading comprehension of this genre of book.  Students can still use the Reading Powers.
1) Visualizing
2) Connecting
3) Questioning
4) Inferring
5) Transforming

Students can also:
-Summarize (What are the main ideas being presented?)
-What have you learned?
-Vocabulary
-Focus on nonfiction features (table of contents, headings/ subtitles, and glossary)

Reminders:

  • Library tomorrow
  • Return home reading tomorrow
  • Early dismissal on Friday

This morning, we had a special guest who led us through a writing task.  Students thought of the creative places that their rocks may have come from.  Some of the ideas included: rocks that came from asteroids and volcanoes, rocks that may have come from famous places or belong to important people, and rocks that were around during prehistoric times.  Students were able to develop interesting pieces of writing, with good details and description.
